I get this weird static like sound through the speakers. So, apparently this is the best solution so far that has helped the most people. Also try to download nvidia’s drivers to see if they fix your problem. I suspect this principle could also be applied to the southbridge. Apr 13, Posts:

Rocko Ars Centurion Registered: It’s sort of like a CPU monitor in a way, when the CPU is being highly used, it is a louder static sound, and when it isn’t being used you can barely notice it.
I would also imagine that many of these people have also experienced the sound crackling when the SB gets too hot.
Mako22 Ars Scholae Palatinae Registered: I’ve tried older drivers, newer drivers, Realtek drivers, NVswitch, everything that I have seen on many, many forums about this issue and nothing seems to work. Anybody have any suggestions for my specific board? I replaced my onboard sound with an audigy though, because I couldn’t get more than one app at a time to use the soundcard even with nvidia’s drivers.
Registration is quick, simple and absolutely free. Theres a fix you have to apply. It did not center on the Southbridge perfectly, but as long as it clears the surrounding components, it is not an issue.
For anybody else with this problem: My SB got scorching hot after a while of use, so I slapped on an old, cheap heatsink from an intel i graphics card. Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux? Normally I wouldn’t care about this, but since I upgraded my kernel a few hours ago to 2.

For active cooling, my case has a mm blow hole on the side that cools both the stock Northbridge and the new Southbridge. When sound is being played, it’s a softer screech and it is less frequent than without. Would it cool just as a7n8x- as it would be covering the whole chip?

Covers the whole thing, gets quite hot, though I never got sound crackling issues before, so I couldn’t tell you if it helps any. And I have never heard the windows start-up or shutdown sounds. aound
